HOMESCHOOL BLOG: Bee hand puppet to make- Bee Attitudes

Bee puppets  made from the same pattern.

In the 90's I was a free lance puppetry designer.   The  bee puppet was part of a curriculum meant to help kindergarten children learn  classroom behavior. The children took turns manipulating the puppet.  Whoever was holding the bee got to talk while everyone else listened.  "Bee good listeners."
Some of the Bee-Attitudes (as I call them)  were shared in an interactive talk time.  "Bee Glad,  Bee Safe,  Bee Kind, and Bee Happy. And bee yourself!"

Felt Hand Puppets and Fairy Tales

Both are wonderful teaching tools for interactive story telling.

Three Bears  basic felt hand puppets in front.
Soft sculpture in back.

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS
Felt Hand Puppets can be altered to make soft sculptures.
Use a basic felt hand puppet:
make a cut for legs, sew 1/4" around body and  feet,
clip curves, turn inside out, stuff.  Then close
with a hand stitch inside leg seams  Decorate!
Romans 13:9  "Love your neighbor as yourself."
INTERACTIVE STORY TELLING:   The teacher narrates a well known fairy tale, and children in the audience volunteer to hold or manipulate the puppet,  and  repeat  familiar lines such as Papa Bear saying,  "Who's been eating my porridge?"  (A simple "Grrr"  might suffice for very little children participating.  Grrr-ace. Grace.)  And the whole verse in  Romans 13:9 explains it best-    Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS:
Goldilocks likes to stir things up,  like porridge and trouble!
Baby Bear likes to have fun and jump on the bed.  Boing, boing.
Papa Bear likes to growl!  GRRR....
Mamma Bear likes to tidy up the house and knit.  Tut Tut Tut.  (Perhaps Goldilocks sat on Mother Bear's knitting needles and they got bent?  Interactive puppetry-ad lib! )

A hand puppet is easy to manipulate.  Slip it over your hand like a glove,  and wiggle your fingers until you get used to it! The story can be adapted to feet the needs of those you participate.

HOMESCHOOL BLOG: simple fish hand puppet pattern

Increase the pattern size to fit an 8 1/2" X 11" piece of typing paper and felt squares.
 The fish is 7" X 11".

Fish Hand Puppet
Embellished with felt pieces and a wiggly eye.

The basic fish shape.
This one includes a top fin that is a half circle that is 2 1/2 " X 3 1/2 "

The mouth of the fish is formed by stitching and indent..
The thumb and finger pinch the mouth.  And the wrist movement wiggles the fish.

Use good glue.
Tacky glue  needs time to dry.  A low melt glue gun may be in order on humid days.
Glitter glue.  Hot glue gun with adult supervision, and permanent glue dots.

Opposum hand puppet and smock with pocket.Op

Opposum hand puppets with a pocket for tiny treasures.  The more detail the more fun.  The puppet to the right is embellished with puffy paint, felt flowers, wand and a feather glued to a pencil.

When my granddaughter was a toddler and barely old enough to walk or talk,  she carried home from the beach  a treasure of  little seashells.  She opened her cupped hands,  and said with great elation,  "I found them at the beach!"  These she helped to wrap  up in a small box to give to her father on Father's Day.

This colorful butterfly frock, with a very large lavender eyelet pocket, was made to wear while gathering treasures.  The  pocket is sewn across the top, and half way up the sides, so treasures won't fall out.

The pattern  is an adaptation of the frock pattern found in the book called,  "Carefree Clothes for Girls" by UONCA.  A pocket could be sewn onto a store bought smock.
